Veterinary license
The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority is the statutory body that supervises the work of all veterinarians in Iceland. The authority issues the Icelandic veterinary licences and a list of working veterinarians in Iceland. Information for veterinarians who intend to work in Iceland can be found on this page.

The collection of fees for inspections and other service projects of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, e.g. issuance of permits, certificates, registration, etc. goes according to the authority's tariff. The invoices are electronic and published on Ísland.is and in the online bank of the recipient.
Icelandic veterinary licence
To apply for an Icelandic veterinary licence, the applicant must fill out the following application form below and send it to mast@mast.is. Applicants that have an Icelandic identity number should apply through Þjónustugátt (Application no. 10.07, available on the Icelandic version of the website).
The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) will evaluate if the veterinary degree is from an approved university within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). To be eligible for a veterinary licence in Iceland the education has to be 6.2 ISQF or higher according to the Icelandic Qualification Framework. In cases where veterinary degrees are acquired at universities outside the EU or EEA, MAST will have the Icelandic veterinary council evaluate them.
When the education has been deemed sufficient the applicant has to familiarize themselves to applicable laws and regulations and finish an interview with MAST reviewing them. The applicant must also have a training in the database Heilsa, which is a registration system for veterinarians on diagnosis and treatments.
The application must be accompanied by the following documents:
- A copy of the applicant’s passport
- A copy of a graduation documents for the veterinary degree
- Academic records or other documentation that shows clearly what education the applicant has acquired.
- A letter of good standing, or a similar certificate of current professional status, must be sent from the competent authority directly to mast@mast.is. The document cannot be older than 6 months.
If the applicant has acquired the veterinary degree outside of the EU or EEA the applicant also has to apply for an evaluation by the Icelandic ENIC/NARIC office. The result of the evaluation by ENIC/NARIC must accompany the application. The evaluation of the education has to be 6.2 ISQF or higher according to the Icelandic Qualification Framework, as mentioned above.
Temporary work in Iceland based on a European veterinary licence
Veterinarians who come from abroad to Iceland to practice veterinary medicine temporarily must notify MAST by filling out the following form below and send it to mast@mast.is.
The notification must be accompanied by the following documents:
- A copy of the applicant’s passport
- A copy of your European veterinary licence
- A letter of good standing, or a similar certificate of current professional status, must be sent from the competent authority directly to mast@mast.is. The document cannot be older than 6 months.
- If the applicant is being employed by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority academic records or other documentation that shows clearly what education the applicant has acquired are needed.
